The efforts of a group of youths from the Glyncoch Estate who recently put together a short anti-smoking awareness film have been recognised at the High Sheriff ’s Youth Awards for Mid Glamorgan.

High Sheriff Barbara Wilding presented the group, which came 2nd, with a cheque at an event which took place in Pencoed, Bridgend on Thursday evening (March 15th).

The group took it upon themselves to raise awareness amongst their peers about the dangers and negativity associated with nicotine addiction, and it resulted in the short film which can now be viewed on Youtube (http://bit.ly/zpya0a).

They developed a character, a rapper who has everything called Smalley Dee. He starts to smoke, soon gets hooked, and falls into a downward spiral, socially and physically.

The closing strap line "You smoke, you choke, you croak!" underpinned all that they were trying to convey.

Neighbourhood Policing Team Sergeant Anthony Williams, who nominated the group for the awards, said: “I was really impressed that these young people chose to make a stand over something that they could have just as easily ignored. In an area of
high unemployment where smoking is relatively commonplace, it is refreshing to see the enthusiasm they showed. The creativity and thought that went into the video will hopefully have an impact on people.”

The video was put together with the help of Glyncoch Communities First members, but with no external funding whatsoever. The youths now hope to put their winnings towards making another video about alcohol and drug abuse.

The event was also attended by special guest Roy Noble, and South Wales Police Assistant Chief Constable Julian Kirby.
