THE FIRST EVER TAFF SOUTH COMMUNITY CUP

Date Published: 21/10/2011

Brynnau School has hosted the first "Taff South Police Community Cup". The cup was organised by the Taff South Neighbourhood Policing Team to help bring neighbouring communities closer. The competition was also about breaking down barriers between school pupils, their peers and the Police.

The competition involved primary schools across Taff South with year 6 pupils facing each other in a 6-a-side football tournament. 80 children attended the event from 8 schools. The competition it self started at 1pm on Friday 14th October at Brynna Community Field.

Two groups of 5 schools competed against each other, with the top 2 successful teams from the groups progressing to the semi-finals. The four teams to progress were Brynnau (1st group 1) Llanhari (2nd group 1) Maesybryn (1st group 2) Tonysguboriau (2nd group 2).

The semi-finals were a close affair with Tonysguboriau beating Brynnau and Maesybryn beating Llanhari. The 3rd/4th playoff between Brynnau and Llanhari was a thrilling contest with the result settled by a penalty shootout, Llanhari the victors.

The final between Maesybryn & Tonysguboriau was well contested with the player’s demonstrating hard work and great team endeavour. Maesybryn edged it by a great goal from Conner Shields. Maesybryn were worthy winners of the competition, winning every game apart from their first which they draw 1 - 1 against Tonysguboriau.

The presentation concluded a great event with Taff Sector Inspector, Inspector Griffiths and Llanharan Community Council Chairman Barry Stephens presenting Maesbryn the winners trophy. They also presented the best boy and best girl trophies (Conner Shields Maesybryn & Tirion Phillips Gwainmeisgyn) and a fairplay award. This award judged by the referees was awarded to Gwainmeisgyn for outstanding attitude during the competition both on and off the field.

A special thanks go to the Taff South Neighbourhood Policing Team and in particular PCSO Richard Hill for orgainising the competition, Llanharan & Llantrisant Community Councils for helping to fund the event and Brynnau School for hosting the event. Special thanks for Brynna Youth Football, Brynna Community Centre, Tebbey Signs, CMS Teamwear and Llanharan Drop-in Centre for their support.

Finally a big thank you to the following schools for their attendance and participation: Brynnau Primary, Dolau Primary, Llanharan Primary, Llanhari Primary, Tonysguboriau Primary, Maesybryn Primary, Gwaunmeisgyn Primary and Llanilltud Faerdref Primary.
