Man beaten with bar on his doorstep

Date Published: 19/10/2011

POLICE have launched a manhunt after a 47-year-old was punched to the ground and beaten about the head with an iron bar on the doorstep of his own home.

The victim suffered cuts and bruising to his head and body, a torn cornea in his left eye and broken fingers on both hands in what police say was an unprovoked attack.

Officers are urging anyone who saw the incident — or who has information about the assault — to come forward.

The attack happened at a house in Ffordd Beck, Gowerton, just before 6pm on Monday.

Unprovoked

Detective constable Anthony Jones of Morriston CID appealed for help from the public.

He said: "This was a totally unprovoked attack in the middle of a quiet residential housing area.

"The attack has occurred during early evening when it was still daylight.

"I am appealing to anyone who saw the assault or can help us to identity the suspect to come forward."

The victim was set upon after answering his front door to the assailant.

He was punched once in the head, fell to the floor, and was then beaten with what police believe was a metal bar.

Officers are now trying to piece together the chain of events which led to the knock on the door and the assault.

Police have issued a description of a man they want to talk to in connection with the beating.

Stocky

He is described as being white, aged around 30, between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in, and of a stocky build, with cropped fair hair. He was wearing a dark coloured jacket.

Following the attack, the suspect was seen to make off in the direction of the nearby Elba sports complex.

The victim was later taken to Morriston Hospital where he was treated for lacerations and bruising, a damaged left eye, and two broken fingers.
