PENARTH POLICE CARRY OUT DRUGS OPERATION IN LICENSED PREMISES

Police in Penarth recently carried out a pre-planned drugs operation at a number of the town’s licensed premises.

As part of Operation Yardstick, officers set up special drugs testing equipment, known as an Itemiser, at a number of Penarth’s clubs and pubs on Saturday 14th April. Visitors to the premises were then advised that as a condition of entry they may be subject to a drugs test.

During the evening 277 drug tests were conducted using the Itemiser, which resulted in 16 searches being conducted on those who tested positive for an illegal substance.

The police activity was welcomed by licensees and revellers alike, with visitors commenting that the operation made them feel safer.

Officers will continue to work in partnership with licensees over the coming months to ensure the town remains safe and free from drugs.

Inspector Jay Winslade-Gregory said: “The primary objective of these operations is to provide reassurance to the licensed trade, their customers and the wider public.

“We want to send out a clear message that South Wales Police will not tolerate the use and supply of controlled drugs in Penarth.”
