POLICE WARNING - LOAN SCAM
Police are warning the public after a man from Barry was duped by a scam which promised him a loan in exchange for UKASH payments.
The victim was contacted by an 0208 number and was promised a loan if he made a payment using a UKASH voucher, an international cash payment method.
The man visited a PayPoint to purchase the £250 UKASH voucher and then called the scammer back providing the code for payment.
Having provided the code for the voucher, the victim was advised by the scammer that a further payment would be required due to a problem with the first transaction.
When he did not receive the loan or any further contact from the caller, the man contacted South Wales Police.
Barry Local Policing Inspector Chris Owen said: “I want to stress to the public that this is a scam.
“If you receive a call or letter claiming that you are eligible for a loan, owed money or need to provide your bank details for whatever reason, please do not carry out any of the actions requested and instead contact the police.
“I advise people not to comply with contact from unexpected callers without first verifying the legitimacy of the call. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is”.
