SHEDUCATION

Date Published: 24/05/2012

Here are some useful crime prevention measures for your shed.

S ecure the access to your shed or garage by locking gates and using thorny bushes next to walls and fences, but make sure that large plants are cut back to no more than 1 metre high so that any intruders can be seen.

H ave you secured your perimeter fence? Fences should be of uniform height (approximately 2 metres) and be in good repair, with no climbing aids alongside. A trellis on top to support the growth of 'spiteful' plants will provide even more security.

E xternal security lights activated by movement are a useful deterrent.

D oors of sheds require attention. Use strong pad bars and close shackle padlocks, together with coach bolts or non return screws to secure door hinges. Up and over garage doors supplied with standard lock fittings should also be fitted with a padlock or lockable bolt.

U se a grille fixed to a steel plate inside the windows, or fit reinforced glass, together with good key operated window locks.

C hain cycles, mowers, ladders and tools to a strong anchorage point.

A larms for sheds and garages are available for under £20 from most diy stores and builder’s merchants.

T ogether we'll crack crime, so don't forget to visibly mark the contents of your shed. Make a note of the serial number and identifying features, photographs valuable ornaments, and consider starting or joining a neighbourhood watch scheme.

E xactly what insurance cover do you have? Check that your household policy covers you from your garden and outbuilding.
