Deputy Sheriff Scheme

‘Deputy Sheriff’ is an initiative started by Bonymaen Neighbourhood Policing Team as a result of extensive damage caused to a local school in the Bonymaen area over a six week period during 2007.

The damage amounted to thousands of pounds worth of repairs and the schools insurance company threatening to cease their policy.

The aim of The Deputy Sheriff Scheme is to encourage young people to take an active interest in protecting their school premises. Pupils are encouraged to report incidents to adults who can take the necessary action. Once sworn in the ‘Deputy Sheriffs’ are awarded Certificates, Business Cards with holders and Baseball Caps all displaying the ‘Deputy Sheriff’ logo.

Who are Deputy Sheriffs?

Deputy Sheriffs are local school children who look after their school. Deputy Sheriffs are the Eyes and Ears of their school and report anything they think suspicious to appropriate adult/teacher. They are not encouraged to challenge people, merely report incidents they think maybe suspicious to an adult.

Where does Deputy Sheriff come from?

Deputy Sheriff is an initiative started by the Bonymaen Neighbourhood Policing Team as a result of thousands of pounds worth of damage caused to local schools. Cwm Primary School in Bonymaen suffered £14,000 over the six week summer holiday period. In December 2007 the Deputy Sheriffs scheme was introduced at Cwm Primary just prior to the Christmas break. During that holiday and subsequent breaks there have been no incidents of damage at the school.

How do pupils become Deputy Sheriffs?

To become a Deputy Sheriff, pupils have to be sworn in by a member of your local Neighbourhood Policing Team and promise to look after their school. Deputy Sheriffs are then presented with a baseball cap, certificate, business card and holder. At the end of every school term your local Neighbourhood Policing Team will re-attend and remind Deputy Sheriffs of their promise to look after the school during the holiday period.
