Tonypandy Police Station is one of the original and oldest working police stations in RCT. Built in 1876 it stands proudly in the heart of Dunraven Street which is the main shopping centre in Tonypandy. This station has been manned by police officers for the last 132 years. One of the most historical events in Tonypandy took place in November 1910 whereby local coal miners went on strike from the local Glamorgan Colliery over a dispute with pay. This strike led to rioting within the town and hand-to-hand fighting with the Glamorgan Constabulary and also the reinforcement officers from the Bristol City Constabulary. As rioting continued Winston Churchill authorised officers from the Metropolitan Police Force and also the military to be deployed to Tonypandy.

Lady with the Lamp
Lady with the Lamp

This picture is the unveiling of statue / fountain of the ‘Lady with the Lamp’ which was erected on Tonypandy Square in the memory of Archibald Hood in 1909.

This fountain was removed by the local council after a vehicle collided with it and is currently in storage. There are plans by the local council to get this statue repaired and once again place it as a focal point within Tonypandy as part of the Heritage Trail.

The Powerhouse
The Powerhouse

The Powerhouse stands at the entrance to Tonypandy and is one of the most iconic buildings of the Rhondda. This building was the focal point of the Tonypandy Riots as the striking miners attempted to stop production at the Glamorgan Colliery. There are plans taking place in order to celebrate the centenary of this event in November 2010.

Tonypandy not only has strong heritage but also a strong community. Today the town is still the main meeting point for residents and visitors within the pedestrian area. The street market takes place every Friday with many stalls selling their wares. The closure of the Woolworths store was a huge blow to the town but it is hoped that the re-opening of a new Iceland store in its place will attract more visitors to the shopping centre.
