Upper Loughor
ward covers
Upper Loughor Town is located inland and up the hill from Lower Loughor and was well established as a distinct settlement by the mid 19th Century.
In common with the neighbouring areas, it owes much of it's early development to coal mining, with a number of significant collieries, including Broad Oak and Cae Duke employing a large number of workers.
The Cae Duke Colliery was closed in 1947 and the land has since been developed for housing.
The development of the coal, iron and steel industries encouraged further development in the early 20th Century, particularly around the Borough Road.
